The crazy story of Alakh Pandey

How one man raised $210M with only a whiteboard, camera and a marker

Alakh Pandey was your average definition of a normie. Since he was a child, he has always wanted to study engineering at an IIT.

Although he did not graduate from an IIT, Alakh felt a strong calling to give back to the community that shaped him. So, he decided to start teaching kids on YouTube, coaching them for competitive exams like JEE/NEET and other competitive exams.

He started teaching under the channel name “PhysicsWallah”(translated as “The Physics Guy”). Alakh’s relatable and engaging teaching style quickly resonated with students and things quickly took off, and he suddenly gathered a lot of subscribers.

PhysicsWallah soon turned into a platform that allowed millions of student across India to prepare for competitive exams. As the platform popularity rose, Alakh recognized the need for more scaling, hence he released the PW app and opened 105 offline centers for teaching.

PW recently closed its Series B funding round, raising INR 1,760 crore, which boosted its post-money valuation to INR 23,500 crore—a 2.5x increase from the previous valuation of INR 8,000 crore.

As of now, PhysicsWallah offers free education to over 4.6 crore students. The PW app has been downloaded over 3+ crore times, and the company has over 55+ lakh paid students.

His story just shows as to how anyone with a marker and a whiteboard can teach over 4 crore students. 🔥
