The website that is worth a million dollars
What if i sold the internet?
โWhat if i sold the internet?โ are words that Alex Tew- a broke British college student asked himself when he stared at a massive tuition bill with nothing but an empty wallet and a whole lot of stress ๐. Most would have just settled for a part-time job/asked their parents, but Alex had a different idea in mind.๐ก
So in August 2005, Alex Tew came with a genius plan to fund his education. He created the Million Dollar Homepage ๐, which was a website with 1,000,000 pixels selling each pixel at 1$. Advertisers/individuals could purchase as many pixels as they wanted.
As the word spread๐, companies saw this as a potential for advertising. Buyers could fill their purchased pixels with anything they wanted, potentially turning the webpage into a chaotic mosaic of ads.
Tew cleverly marketed this as a limited opportunity to own a piece of internet history and within 5 months he sold every pixel, which earned him a grand total of $1,037,100. ๐ธ
This project of his is still referenced today as a case study in digital marketing and entrepreneurship. It shows us that even the most unconventional ideas can find great success online.
There have been many other copycat sites, though none of them really reached the same level of fame/financial reward. Alex Tew didnโt just fund his education by himself; he made internet history. ๐
